Overnight Sleep Study Instructions

When Will I Be Tested? Please arrive at 8:30 p.m. Please bring your medical card with you.

If you plan to cancel this appointment, we require 3 working days’ notice. Surrey Sleep Lab will bill you $300 for late cancellation or if you fail to keep this appointment.

Before Arriving: Please have a shower and shampoo and dry your hair before coming to the lab. Please do not put moose, oil, or gel in your hair. Please do not wear makeup or any lotion on your face or legs. Oily skin or hair may make it difficult to attach the necessary wires and may affect the quality of your results. Please do not wear any perfume, as many of our other patients are allergic.

How Is The Procedure Done? The technician will spend 30-60 minutes attaching various monitors to you using glues and tapes, in order to measure your breathing, heart rate and sleep patterns. There is no discomfort involved in attaching these monitors and the majority of people are able to sleep without difficulty. After the monitors are attached, you may wish to read for a short while until you decide to go to sleep. You will be undisturbed for the remainder of the night. The technician will disconnect you around 5:00 – 5:30 a.m. and you will be discharged shortly afterwards.

What To Bring? Bring 2-piece loose fitting pyjamas (or nighty), housecoat, and slippers. Bring in any snack or beverage that you are accustomed to having before bedtime, as well as any reading material or private listening device. Please bring your medical card with you.

If you are taking medications on a regular basis because of a sleep disorder or for any other reason, please DO NOT STOP them on the night of the sleep study. You can always call us if you are unsure about this matter.

If you have been booked for a CPAP titration study, please take your whole CPAP unit (machine, mask, hose, connectors and humidifier).
